Headboard 1 DIY: Upholstered Headboard

I’ve been wanting to make an upholstered headboard for a while now and I finally bit the bullet and did it! I am not the most experienced DIY’er but found this project to be simple and completely doable. I was lucky to have an extra set of hands to help me with some of the stapling and drilling. Follow the steps below to make your own!

What you need to make a headboard:

  • Particle Board or Plywood (purchase at Home Depot and have them cut it to size) – My king size bed required 76″x27″
  • 1″ Thick Foam (Joann Fabrics – use a coupon and buy enough to cover your particle board)
  • Batting (Joann Fabrics – again, use a coupon and buy enough to cover your particle board)
  • Spray Adhesive (Joann Fabrics)
  • Staple Gun & Staples
  • Fabric (I bought mine at Hancock Fabrics)
  • 1 package (includes 2) of D-rings
  • 1 package (includes 2) of Hooks that hold 100 lbs.

Steps:

1. Lay your wood on the floor.

2. Cut foam to fit the size of your wood exactly.

3. Spray your wood with adhesive and quickly place your foam on the wood. Pat it down to be sure that the foam sticks to the wood.

4. Lay batting out on the floor. Place your wood (foam side down) on the batting. Fold the batting over the edges and staple in place.

5. Lay your freshly ironed fabric on the floor. Place your wood (batting side down) on top of it. Fold the fabric over the edges and staple in place.

6. Attach your D-Rings to the back of headboard. Make sure you find the studs in your wall and match the placement of the D-rings with those studs. You definitely want this headboard to be secure on your wall!

Batting = $8.80

Foam = $35.00
