Holiday Card Etiquette

Holiday Card Holiday Card Etiquette
I love getting mail. Okay, I will be more honest with you. I  have an unhealthy obsession with receiving mail. Every day, I arrive home from work, kiss my husband, and excitedly ask “did we get any mail?!” Every. Single. Day.

There is something so refreshing and humbling about opening up my mailbox and finding something personal, something written by a real person, something that someone intended for me. And because I love this feeling so much, I tend to write and send a lot of cards to my family and friends so that they know they are thought of and loved too. Now don’t get me wrong, hearing from loved ones via e-mail is great! However, it’s my opinion that good old snail mail wins everytime for being more creative, more gratifying, and more thoughtful.

By now, you can probably guess that my unusual obsession is constantly fed during the holidays. OH how I LOVE sending and receiving Christmas cards! I already purchased and received my cards this year and cannot wait to get them in the mail (I ordered from Minted, LOVE the quality)!

Here are some tips regarding holiday greeting card etiquette that you may find helpful:

  1. Personal Note – Even if you have photo cards printed like I do, it’s always nice to add a short personal note along with your handwritten signature on the back.
  2. Time Frame – Etiquette dictates that holiday cards should be sent anytime between Thanksgiving and New Years Day. I, however, like to have mine in the mail during the 2nd week of December. I hand-address and stamp all of my envelops on Thanksgiving weekend and then take the next 1-2 weeks to write notes and stuff/seal my cards.
  3. Putting It Together – The proper way to insert a card is to hold the envelope so that the back flap is facing you. Lift the flap and place your card into the envelope face up towards you.
  4. Return Address – The proper spot for a return address on social correspondence is on the back flap of the envelope. I have this personalized stamp that I absolutely love and use all the time!

So do you send holiday cards? Store bought, photo cards, or DIY? I’d love to hear from you!

XO, Louisa
